ConKerr Cancer Brings A Case for Smiles to the Family Room
Cindy Kerr and her team of volunteers from ConKerr Cancer brought "a case for smiles" to the Oncology Family Room at the Children's Hospital on April 1, 2008. Children spent the afternoon making pillowcases thanks to Cindy's program, which has made over 27,000 pillowcases for children with cancer over the last two and a half years. Matthew Brand, age 17, pictured above with Cindy and his father William, enjoyed sewing for the first time. "It was really fun," he says, "I like the pillowcases because they make the room more cheerful than just a plain hospital room."
Cindy began making pillowcases for her son Ryan while he was undergoing treatment for cancer. She soon started sewing to brighten the rooms of all of the children in the hospital, and today the ConKerr Cancer initiative has spread to 40 hospitals nationwide with locations in Canada and South Africa; it was also featured on the Martha Stewart Show. By 2012, her goal is to have a pillowcase available for every child facing cancer or other life-threatening illnesses. "I know what a difference it made for us," Cindy says of making the pillowcases. "It's amazing the smiles you see."
