Providing a Salon Experience for the Families at the House

Michael Zarkroff’s first experience with the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House was over 15 years ago, when visiting on a school field trip.  “I think the Ronald McDonald House is one of the best charities in the world,” Michael responded when asked why he chose to offer his services to the House.  Michael, often referred to as Michal Z, is a professional stylist with over 11 years of experience in the field.  Knowing he wanted to give back to the community and in particular to the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald house, Michael picked up the phone and inquired about the possibility of providing professional haircuts for the families staying the House.

Michael’s first volunteer experience at the House was in June of 2010 and now every other Thursday the activity board in the kitchen reads: “Haircuts by Michael Z”.  This is a very popular activity, especially for some of the women that stay at the House for extended periods of time.  “We’ve been here for seven weeks now and must stay for another five – during fetal surgeries you can’t go home. When your hours from your normal routine; Michael’s professional salon services at the House are such a treat”, explains a mother staying at the House with a child receiving treatment at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

While Michael enjoys providing haircuts for the families, his favorite part of volunteering is spending time with them and engaging in conversation during their salon experience.  “The people here live in each and every moment – they don’t need “things” to keep them happy and that really inspires me” says Michael.

When asked how long Michael plans on volunteering his services at the House, he answers: “Indefinitely”.  The services that Michael provides for the families at the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House might seem like a routine errand but for the 45 families staying at the Chestnut Street House this mobile salon experience can be invaluable.   Michael is a perfect example of how a person can leverage their skills to help the families staying at the House. We truly appreciate Michael’s continued support of the families who walk through the doors at the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House everyday!
