Tim Ellithorpe, a 27 year-old Financial Analyst for Environmental Health Systems and Technologies, has been volunteering his time at the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House since April of 2005. Tim’s story began at the Chestnut Street House seven years ago while he was interning through Drexel University’s Co-op Program. When asked why he began to volunteer after his co-op, Tim answered, “I was hooked the day I walked through the front door.”
Tim is a member of the growing number of young professionals who are making time to volunteer at the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House.
“I typically volunteer on the 6PM-9PM shift; therefore I have an excuse to cut out of work at a reasonable time.” Tim jokes. Tim’s volunteer responsibilities include driving the van, checking-in families, and giving tours. He went on to say that he really enjoys driving the van because it is a great way to get to know the families. Tim is often amazed how grateful the families are for the services provided at the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House.
Tim’s favorite memory of the House came from a family who stayed at the House for many months. The family owned a few restaurants in New Orleans and the father of the patient was a chef. Near the end of their stay, the family thanked the volunteers and staff by making everyone a New Orleans style feast: jambalaya, crabs, and stuffed artichokes. Tim went on to say, “It was some of the best food I’ve had in my lifetime!”
Tim has also made many great friendships and lasting memories with his fellow volunteers throughout his time at the House. “I’ve met an overwhelming number of great people who I keep in touch with outside the house,” says Tim. “Volunteering at the PRMH is something I have thoroughly enjoyed doing for the better part of 6 years.”
We thank Tim and the over 300 volunteers that keep the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House running 365 days a year!
