The Jill and Alan B. Miller Tower
We’ve learned a lot in our time on Chestnut Street, and we’ve spent countless hours talking with families about what makes our house special—and what could make it even better! All of that experience and advice has been poured into the architectural plans for our new 8-story tower building—named the Jill and Alan B. Miller Tower—which will add 88 bedrooms to our house, and more than double our capacity to serve.
Cooking and Dining Center
Mealtime is essential to every family—especially at the Ronald McDonald House, where maintaining good health as well as preserving comfort and normalcy for families is at the core of our mission. Our grand Cooking and Dining Center will include a fully equipped residential-style Family Kitchen, a commercial-grade Guest Chef Kitchen, seating for up to 175 individuals, and a Play Area for patients, siblings, and their friends.
Dedicated outdoor space can be incomparably therapeutic for patients and families. Whether used as quiet space for meditation or relaxation or a gathering place for families to unwind in the sunshine, the Rooftop Garden will be a transformational addition to our house. Opening in a future phase of construction, the Garden will include a walking path and quiet reflection areas for families, and will lead to the Outdoor Dining Area via a stunning two-tier Grand Staircase.
Main Promenade and Reception
The architectural heart and hub of our new Chestnut Street home, the Main Promenade and Reception will connect families and guests to all new and historic areas of the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House, through a central reception and walkway system.
Guest Bedroom Floors
Because restful, convenient lodging is at the very core of what our families seek from the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House, each floor in the new Miller Tower will feature 16 comfortably appointed guest bedrooms, two of which will be wheelchair accessible. And, every floor also includes laundry and trash facilities, a workstation and a quiet area—necessities for every family, regardless of their length of stay.
Patient Protected Guest Bedroom Floor
Accessible only to families with immune-suppressed patients, the Patient Protected Guest Bedroom Floor will include eight family bedroom suites, each with sleeping accommodations for the patient, caregivers and a guest, a kitchenette and seating area, a dedicated Family Lounge, and other shared amenities such as laundry and rubbish facilities.
Family Welcome Center
The welcome to our House will always be warm! Every family, guest and visitor is greeted and acclimated to the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House through this warm, inviting area. Through Room in Our Hearts, the current Family Welcome Center located in the historic mansion house will be expanded and connected to the magnificent Main Promenade and Reception area in the Miller Tower.
The kitchen is the heart of every home, and mealtime is essential to every family—especially at the Ronald McDonald House, where maintaining good health as well as preserving comfort and normalcy in families is at the core of our mission. Our new fully equipped residential kitchen will give families ample space to prepare the meals that make them feel at home throughout the day.
Board and Community Partners Meeting Rooms
Making room for all the daily operations that keep our house strong, the current board room will be renovated and expanded to better accommodate both internal and community group meetings.
Theater and Activity Center
The Theater and Activity center will play a key role in bringing families together each day. In addition to a large screen for movies, tiers of seating and movable furniture will allow the space to accommodate all kinds of activities, including music therapy workshops, therapy dog visits, regular visits from the Philadelphia Zoo, magicians, dance troops, and other partners.
Little kids need big spaces to call their own! Located in the current Living Room, the Youngsters Playroom will offer children eight and under a large, electronics-free zone for traditional creative play, including train tables, costumes for dress-up, and more.
Dining Room Play Area
Because mealtime is also critical downtime for our families, this multi-age play area is strategically located in the dining room, offering patients and siblings a space to unwind after meals and giving their caregivers an opportunity to eat, relax, and to socialize.
Grab and Go Meal and Snack Area
For busy families running back and forth between the House and the hospital, on-the-go meal options can be a lifesaver! This convenient area will provide families with quick and easy access to beverages, healthy breakfast, and individually packed meals and snacks.
Outdoor Dining Area
This signature feature of the renovation and expansion plan will offer beautiful and tranquil outdoor seating for sunny day meals, and a restaurant-quality Grilling Station for our guest chefs year-round.
Patient Protected Family Lounge
Accessible only to families staying on the patient protected floor, this Family Lounge includes a kitchen area to prepare meals, a living room area, and an activity area for immune-suppressed patients and their families.
Arts, Crafts and Education Area
Kids—and adults—need spaces to get creative! The Arts, Crafts and Education Area will feature movable tables and chairs, sinks, and storage space to accommodate all kinds of programming—from art therapy workshops and science projects to tutoring and homework support for patients and siblings—and more.
Family Lounge and Study
A much-needed multi-use space, the new Family Lounge and Study will be located on the second floor of our existing building and connect to our Miller Tower building. It will offer a sitting and study area and laundry facilities for the families staying on the second floor.
Grand Outdoor Staircase
A stunning architectural feature of the new outdoor space, the two-tier Grand Staircase will lead guests from the Outdoor Dining Area to an rooftop garden (to be opened in a future phase of construction).
In the Miller Tower, two Guest Elevators will efficiently carry thousands of patients and their families between floors two and eight and to the future rooftop garden each year.

Finding dedicated space to catch up on work or daily activities of life, while still monitoring kids at play, can be a challenge when families are away from home. The Parents Perch will offer work and lounge space—including a laptop plug-in counter and a quiet sitting area—overlooking the Youngsters Playroom.
Library and Quiet Lounges
Quiet spaces for work, reading, and reflection can be critical to our families. Each floor in the Miller Tower will include a library nook for guests to borrow reading materials as well as a quiet lounge to telecommute, read, or meditate.
