Volunteer at PRMH

The heart of the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House is our Volunteer program. There is so much that our volunteers do to help make the House a comfortable and supportive place for our families.

The caring and cheerful volunteers of the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House are the first voices families hear on the telephone and the first smiling faces they see at the door. Whether it’s planning and coordinating an evening family activity, supplying and cooking a meal for the families through our Guest Chef Program, being a part of our spring cleaning crew, or committing to a weekly shift, our volunteers make this House a home. We are now seeking volunteer van drivers to transport our families to and from the hospital to visit their children each day. Click here to learn more about this opportunity. Volunteers staff the House from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week.

We have three different shifts: 9 a.m.-1 p.m., 1 p.m.-6 p.m., and 6 p.m.-9 p.m. At least six people volunteer on each shift.

All volunteers must be at least 18 years old and be responsible for following the schedule. There is a minimum commitment to volunteering twice a month for one year. Volunteer duties are varied depending on the day of the week, time of day, and occupancy rate.

Below is a list of some duties that volunteers participate in at the House:

  • Greet and welcome families and visitors to the House
  • Register families into the House
  • Answer phone calls from hospital personnel, families, and visitors
  • Assist with mailings
  • Provide support for special events
  • Write thank you letters to donors
  • Assist with clerical or data entry work
  • Keep the kitchen and public areas well organized
  • Assist volunteer groups with the evening meal
  • Drive the van at scheduled times or as needed (additional training necessary)

While the list describes typical volunteer duties, our House is successful in serving families due to the flexibility of our volunteers. We depend on people who are willing to pitch in wherever needed.

Opportunities for Students

There are volunteer activities especially suited for high school students during the summer. Students must be able to commit to volunteering twice per week over a period of eight weeks from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.
